Bulger Juror Thinks Only Certain Families Should Address Mobster
BOSTON (CBS) -- Whitey Bulger will learn this week -- how much time he'll spend in prison.
A jury convicted the former south Boston mob boss in connection with several murders... and racketeering. But one of the jurors... has a request for the judge for Wednesday's sentencing.
In fact this juror has written a letter to the judge asking that she not allow some families to address Bulger on Wednesday. This juror thinks for the most part, only the 11 families connected to the jury verdict should have that right.
"The other 8 families, I feel awful for them," Janet Uhlar said.
Uhlar of Cape Cod, was juror number 12 in the trial. Jurors only determined that Bulger participated in 11 of the 19 murders in the original indictment.
Uhlar thinks just those families should be allowed to give victim impact statements on Wednesday.
"A jury deliberated, we did it with great purpose and it was a difficult deliberation. And we came up with a verdict and if you interfere with a jury verdict you are interfering with the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence," she said.
Uhlar predicts that Bulger will break his silence and speak to the families on Wednesday as well.
"He did not speak at the end of the trial but this time I think he will like he needs to."
WBZ legal analyst Gerry Leone disagrees.
He thinks Bulger will not speak and he predicts he will just sit there while the families speak.
"At this point it does not matter to Bulger. He will probably just sit there quietly. And hope that it is over ….and then move on to the next chapter for him."
Bulger still faces murder charges in Oklahoma and Florida and both those states have the death penalty.
Uhlar also told WBZ, she thinks only the 11 families connected to the jury verdict should be compensated if and when Bulger's assets are divided up.
