Buddy Cianci Treated For 'Completely Curable' Cancer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci is being treated for what he says is curable cancer.
Cianci said on Monday he has been hospitalized for a week at the Miriam Hospital in Providence after being diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer.
Former Mayor Joe Paolino, a Cianci friend, says he's in great spirits and being released Monday.
Cianci, who's in his 70s, is a talk show host at WPRO-AM and political analyst at WLNE-TV. He plans to be back on air next week and will continue treatment.
Cianci was one of the longest-serving mayors in U.S. history, but his legacy was tainted by criminal convictions.
He was elected in 1974 but forced from office 10 years later after assaulting a man. He was re-elected in 1990 but convicted in 2002 for corruption.
