BU Center May Be Interested In Examining Junior Seau's Brain
BOSTON (CBS) - The BU Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy did not confirm or deny Thursday whether they are interested in studying the brain of former NFL linebacker Junior Seau.
Seau, who played for the Patriots from 2006-2009, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest on Wednesday.
His death led to nationwide discussion about the long-term effects of head injuries.
SI's Peter King reported Thursday that the BU research center is seeking to obtain Seau's brain, but later clarified the center seeks to examine all athletes who played contact sports.
On Thursday, the center would not say whether or not they are seeking to study Seau's brain:
"The BU Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy is saddened by the tragic death of Junior Seau. It is our policy to not discuss any completed, ongoing or potential research cases unless at the specific request of family members. Our primary goal is to learn more about the long-term effects of repetitive brain trauma by conducting meaningful scientific research. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Seau's family, his many friends and former teammates."
