Krug On Fallen Firefighters: 'The Least We Could Do Is Bring People Some Temporary Relief'

BOSTON (CBS) - On Wednesday, two firefighters died while trying to contain the flames in a Back Bay brownstone. Michael Kennedy and Lt. Edward Walsh lost their lives battling the blaze, which started around 2:30 p.m. and strong winds contributed to the difficulty of controlling the fire.

The blaze left 13 other firefighters injured.

It was a somber start to the night at the TD Garden when Bruins players skated around the ice in warmups donning Boston Fire Department hats and a moment of silence was had prior to the game.

The game itself was a big 3-0 win for the B's, shutting out the reigning NHL champion Chicago Blackhawks in front of the home crowd. Rookie defenseman Torey Krug, fresh off his new haircut, joined Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak Friday afternoon for his weekly appearance.

Krug and his teammates were just happy to provide some solace to a grieving city.

"We definitely feel part of this community. I don't know what else to say. The least that we could do is bring people some temporary relief; come to our games and put some smiles on their faces. It's a tough time when things like that happens. Sometimes it's hard to handle," said Krug.

At the conclusion of the game, the Bruins named the Boston Fire Department as the No. 1 star.

As for on the ice, Krug has been essential to the team's success this season as the defense has been decimated by injuries to Dennis Seidenberg and Adam McQuaid. He consistently shows promise in his first full season on an NHL roster, one in which the Bruins are the runaway favorites in the Eastern Conference.

The Bruins are 13-0-1 in their last 14 games, but Krug and his teammates all feel like there's room for improvement.

"We have to make sure we're not satisfied, moving forward we just don't want to be content with the way we're playing now," said Krug. "We know there's a lot of mistakes we can limit. With Tuukka [Rask] and Chad [Johnson] back there in goal those mistakes can go unnoticed sometimes, so we have to make sure we're staying on top of that and fine tuning our game."

Krug also emphasized the need to be "battle tested" before the playoffs start, so playing tough against Montreal and beating the defending champs was a huge step in the right direction in his mind.
