Bruins Recall Goaltender Niklas Svedberg From Providence
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Bruins recalled goaltender Niklas Svedberg from the AHL Providence Bruins on Friday.
Svedberg, 24, has played in 20 games for Providence this season, posting an 11-5-3 record, 2.91 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.
It's unclear what the need is for the Bruins, who have Tuukka Rask and backup Chad Johnson on the NHL roster. The Bruins haven't played since Monday.
UPDATE 12-27-13 10:35am: According to CSNNE insider Joe Haggerty, the Bruins simply just wanted to get a look at Svedberg at the NHL level, and there are no issues with Rask or Johnson that prompted the call up. Svedberg is eligible to play tonight versus Ottawa.
For Svedberg, it's his first call-up to the NHL. He was sent down to Providence on Sept. 28 after the preseason schedule concluded.
Johnson is signed to a one-year, one-way contract with the Bruins. Rask signed an eight-year, $56 million contract extension in the offseason.
