Bruins Making Playoffs Will Come Down To April 7 Vs. Red Wings
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Bruins couldn't take care of business themselves on Tuesday night, but luckily, they got a little help from their rivals up North.
The Bruins failed to earn any key points in New Jersey, falling to the Devils 2-1. They've earned just two points in their last seven games.
But Boston got an assist from the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, as they came back to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 thanks to a pair of third period goals.
The Bruins, despite losing six of their last seven games, kept their slim one-point lead over Detroit for the final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. Each team has five games remaining on the schedule.
Here's a look at the remaining schedules for the two teams and their opposition's record:
Boston Bruins: @ St. Louis (46-22-9); @ Chicago (44-26-7); vs. Carolina (33-28-16); vs. Detroit (38-28-11); vs. Ottawa (34-33-9)
Detroit Red Wings: vs. Minnesota (38-28-11); @ Toronto (28-37-11); vs. Philadelphia (37-25-13); @ Boston (40-29-8); @ NY Rangers (43-24-9)
That means that final playoff spot in the Atlantic will likely come down to the April 7th meeting between the two teams at TD Garden. Luckily, Boston has beat the Red Wings in two of their three meetings this season.
CSNNE's Joe Haggerty joined Toucher & Rich on Wednesday to discuss Boston's recent struggles, and their postseason chances.
"I think it comes down to the penultimate game of the regular season between the two teams at the Garden," said Haggs. "They're both going to stay within a point of each other until then. It's unlikely the Bruins will get more than a point against St. Louis or Chicago, but at this point of the season you just don't know.
"It's very realistic to say it could stay exactly as it is going into that second-to-last game, or maybe they're even by that point or Detroit is a point ahead. But it all comes down to [the Bruins] winning that game," said Haggs.
