Bruins Hire Joe Sacco As Assistant Coach

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Bruins have hired Joe Sacco to be an assistant coach under Claude Julien.

Sacco, a native of Medford, MA, spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabres. Prior to that position he served as the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2009-13, where he compiled a 130-134-40 record and was a Jack Adams finalist in 2010.

After a 13-year NHL career with five teams, Sacco served two years as an assistant coach in the AHL for the Lowell Lock Monsters (2004-05) and the Albany River Rats (2006-07) before becoming a head coach for the Lake Erie Monsters (2007-09).

Sacco played his college career at Boston University, scoring 63 goals to go with 65 assists in 111 games played. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fourth round (71st overall) of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.

Earlier this off-season, Geoff Ward resigned as Julien's top assistant to take a head coaching job in Germany.
