Bruins Chiarelli: Horton Was Playing Hurt Before Concussion
BOSTON (CBS) - It is often the case after the Stanley Cup Playoffs, player injuries surface when it is all said and done.
It turns out Bruins forward Nathan Horton was playing with a pretty bad injury before he was knocked out of the playoffs with a severe concussion in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.
"I know Nathan, before he was hurt with his concussion, was actually hurt. He had a serious separated shoulder," said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli during his year-end press conference on Friday. "I can't remember the game. But if you recall, he had scored the winning goal that game, he got hit between the boards. So he got hurt significantly."
Chiarelli On Horton, Other Injuries
The injury likely occurred in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final when Horton scored the game-winner in overtime against the Tampa Bay Lightning to send Boston to the Stanley Cup Final. He was checked into the boards early in the game, and actually left the ice for a period of time.
Horton was not the only Bruin playing through an injury, but Chiarelli would not name any names.
"I have a sense what the medical report will be," said the Bruins GM. "I think we'll have one, maybe two surgeries. We'll get that out there when I have all the information. We have our guys that were dinged up, all teams do."
"What I can say about the injury front is we were fortunate from that perspective," he added. "When you look back at past winners… you have to have an element of luck and on that front we certainly did."
