Bruins Beat Red Wings
BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins rode a solid effort and a three-goal second period to only their second home victory of the season, a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
The win lifted the Bruins (8-7-1) to 2-5-1 at home - with both wins coming over teams that had played the previous night.
Centers Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci and defenseman Torey Krug scored second-period goals for Boston. Rask, who allowed 27 goals in the six home losses but pitched a shutout in the victory, lost his shutout bid on a power play goal by left winger Justin Abdelkader with 13:23 left.
The Bruins beat the Red Wings for the fifth straight time.
Bergeron scored his sixth goal of the season, Krejci his eighth and Krug his first - Krug with 10 assists on the season before finishing a 2-on-1 off a nifty pass from left winger Brad Marchand to cap the three-goal second period.
Rask (5-6-1) finished with 22 saves, while Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek had 28 stops. Rask, who also had help from a crossbar and a post, came up big for the second time in the third period on center Riley Sheahan on a late power play.
Abdelkader, who signed a seven-year contract extension earlier in the week, scored his first goal in 15 games for the Red Wings (8-8-1).
The Bruins held a 10-1 advantage in shots through the game's first 14 minutes, but the Detroit total didn't include center Dylan Larkin hitting the crossbar with a shot.
Late in the period, center Henrik Zetterberg and Abdelkader broke in 2-on-1 and Rask made the save to keep the game scoreless.
Then the Bruins really took over.
Bergeron broke down the right and hit Mrazek with a shot up high. The puck popped up, Mrazek had no idea where it was and it landed behind him in the crease. Bergeron, who has a four-game points streak, easily fought off left winger Tomas Tatar and stuffed the puck home 7:18 into the second period.
Krejci then used defenseman Jakub Kindl, moved to the inside and beat Mrazek with his first goal in eight games at 8:50.
Marchand chopped the stick out of Zetterberg's hands and then broke in 2-on-1 with Krug before Krug made it 3-0 with three minutes left in the period.
