Bruins 2011 Draft Picks; Sitting Pretty With 9th Overall
BOSTON (CBS) - The Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins head into Friday night's NHL Draft in Minnesota with six draft picks. Here is what they have, and how they got the picks.
First Round
- 9th overall (acquired from Toronto in Phil Kessel trade)
The Bruins are still reaping the benefits from sending Phil Kessel to Toronto. Not only were they able to draft Tyler Seguin with the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, they also have the 9th pick in the 2011 draft.
Most mock drafts have Boston going after another defenseman, with names like Nathan Beaulieu and Ryan Murphy on most of the lists. Both are good passers and could help the Bruins on the power play in the future. Dougie Hamilton is another name to keep an eye on, but it is doubtful the 6-4 blue liner will be around for the ninth pick.
The Bruins are in a great spot to add another young defenseman to their farm system, and possibly a player that can be up with the big club within the next year or two.

The Bruins own first round pick (30th overall) was sent to Toronto for Tomas Kaberle.

Second Round
- 40th overall (acquired from Minnesota for Chuck Kobasew)
The Bruins own second round pick (61st overall) went to the Ottawa Senators in the Chris Kelly trade. The B's still own the 40th pick thank to the Chuck Kobasew trade to Minnesota in 2009.

Third Round
- 81st overall (acquired from Phoenix for Derek Morris)
The Bruins sent their own third round pick (91st overall) to Florida in the Nathan Horton trade, but actually have a better pick from trading Derek Morris to Phoenix in 2010.

Fourth-Sixth Round
The Bruins have their own picks in the fourth (121st), fifth (151st) and sixth (181st) rounds. They do not have a seventh round pick after swapping it with Chicago in 2010 for the 210th pick, used to draft defenseman Zach Trotman.
