Brookline Residents Fed Up With Pigeon Problem

BROOKLINE (CBS) - One Brookline neighborhood is being overrun with dozens of pigeons, and neighbors blame a man who was feeding and raising them in his yard.

Neighbors who live near Edwin Alexanderian's gated home on Hammond Street in Brookline are tired of the mess his pet pigeons leave behind.

The town ordered him to remove the coops he had set up in his back yard and send the birds away.

"After the individual dismantled the pigeon coops, which were put there without permits and approvals, the birds have been remaining," said Patrick Maloney, Chief of Environmental Health.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.

The birds have been perching on roof tops, staining chairs and ruining patio umbrellas.

Alexandrian was not home when WBZ-TV stopped by his house on Thursday, but his friendly flock was.

"He is alleging now there's nothing more he can do," said Maloney. "He saying 'I am not feeding, yet we are seeing hundreds of birds just gathering."

Neighbors on both sides of Alexanderian's home have been complaining for more than a year. Some say the pigeons have cost them hundreds of dollars in cleanup and repairs.

Leeann Hirsch said she heard some strange noises coming from her rooftop.

"And guess what they found inside my storm drain: a dead pigeon. That cost me, to remove, $255," said Hirsch.

The town is now pressing criminal nuisance charges against the bird lover. He also faces fines, which could cost him $100 per day.

The town now wants the homeowner to find a specialist to relocate the birds.
