Brockton Teen Saves Elderly Neighbor From House Fire

BROCKTON (CBS) -- A teenager from Brockton is being credited with saving the life of his elderly neighbor.

Nathan Yassen, 19, was taking out the trash Friday just after 9 p.m. when he saw his neighbor's house was on fire.

Believing his neighbor, 97-year-old Nina Sullivan, was inside, he ran to the house and kicked in the door.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe talked with Yassen.

"The smoke came out really bad. I went in, pulled her out, got her to the door, and then pretty much just waited for the fire department," Yassen told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe.

"Pretty much the only thing going through my mind was getting her out. She was just trying to put it out herself."

Both Sullivan and Yassen were taken to the hospital, and later released.

"I don't really see me as a hero," said Yassen. "I just see me as saving someone I've known since I was a little kid."
