Brockton Student Arrested After Bringing Gun To High School
BROCKTON (CBS) – Brockton Police arrested a student at the high school Friday morning after they say he brought a gun there.
Brockton Superintendent of Schools Michael Thomas said the gun was never shown and that the incident began when students told a teacher about it.
"Students reported to a teacher that they heard another student had a gun. They reported that to a teacher right away. The teacher reported that to (principal) Dr. (Clifford) Murray immediately. The student was escorted to the office and that's when the gun was found in a bag," Thomas told reporters at a news conference.
The unidentified student was then taken away from the school by police around 11 a.m. Thomas said he did not know if the gun was loaded.
No one was hurt and the department said no threats were made. There's no word yet on the student's age.
Thomas said they are well trained for incidents like this.
"It was handled quickly, safely and there was never any active threat," he said.
Police issued a "stay in place order" so they could sweep through the school as a precaution. That was finished around 11:30 a.m.
Buses were brought in early and students were dismissed for the day at noon. All after school activities were cancelled.
The incident came a day after a Brockton Police Officer was shot four times in a separate incident. That officer was released from the hospital Friday.
"The situation last night did not play into my decision" to dismiss students early Friday, Thomas said.
Brockton has one of the largest pubic high schools in the region with 4,000 students and 500 staff members.
