12-Year-Old Brockton Boy Dies Weeks After Fall Through Pond Ice
BROCKTON (CBS) – A 12-year-old boy who fell through the ice on a pond last month in Brockton has died.
Charles "CJ" Thompson and a nine-year-old boy were playing on the ice of the Plouffe Academy Pond January 9 when they fell into the frigid water.
Three men rushed in to save them, but they were only able to free the nine-year-old.
Thompson remained submerged under the ice until fire department divers pulled him out. He had no pulse, but he began breathing after CPR was performed. He was rushed to Tufts Medical Center in Boston where he spent the last several weeks.
He passed away Monday.
Thompson's family released this statement through the hospital Tuesday:
"We would like to thank our family, friends, community and even complete strangers for the outpouring of love and support you have provided to our family over the past month. We are heartbroken to share the sad news that CJ passed away yesterday. We ask you to respect our privacy during this difficult time, so that we may grieve.
Thompson was a sixth grader at Plouffe Academy.
