Breakers To Retire Kristine Lilly's #13
BOSTON (CBS) - The Boston Breakers will retire Kristine Lilly's number 13 this season, making her the first female athlete to have her number retired in Boston.
"Kristine is a true Boston sports legend," says Breakers General Manager Andy Crossley. "Our fans have been so fortunate to have had the opportunity to see her play. This event gives us all a chance to show our appreciation for what Kristine has done for the Breakers and women's soccer as a whole."
The Breakers will hold the ceremony on May 22nd during half-time of the team's game against the Philadelphia Independence at Harvard Stadium.
Lilly was a founding member of the Breakers, starring on the team from 2001-03, and then again when women's soccer re-launched in 2009 when she returned as team captain. She retired following the 2010 season.
Lilly is the most storied player in US soccer history, playing in 352 international appearance for the US Women's National team. She has appeared in five World Cups, winning two, and three Olympic Games, bringing home Gold twice.
"Kristine is the most decorated player in the history of women's soccer and arguably the greatest female athlete in Boston sports history," says Breakers Head Coach Tony DiCicco. "It was a true honor to coach Kristine as a professional here in Boston and for the 1999 World Cup winning US Women's National Team."
