Braintree eyes immigration checks
The Braintree Town Council is considering a proposal that would require contractors and vendors doing business with the town to verify workers' immigration status.
Town Councilor Dan Clifford, the proposal's sponsor, said the measure calls for contractors to use the E-Verify system - a joint program of the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. The system is already required for employers with federal contacts. Clifford said it would make sure contractors are employing those legally allowed to work. The Patriot Ledger of Quincy reports the proposal is scheduled to be heard Monday by the council's ordinance committee. Clifford, running as an independent for state representative in the 5th Norfolk District, and Democratic nominee Mark Cusack both have taken a hard line on illegal immigration.
