Brady: Patriots 'In Decent Position' With 4-3 Record
FOXBORO (CBS) -- The Patriots moved into first place with their narrow overtime victory over the Jets on Sunday, but there wasn't too much jubilation from the team following the game.
"It's good to be 2-0 in the division," head coach Bill Belichick said. "We know the Jets are going to be there all the way through, they'll be there at the end. There's a lot of football left to be played. I don't think anybody clinched anything today, I don't think anybody got eliminated today. There's a long way to go and we just have to keep improving and getting better."
At 4-3 on the season, the Patriots know they can be better, and while they didn't admit it, they likely believed they caught a break by winning Sunday despite a slew of mistakes.
"It comes down to a few plays," Tom Brady said after Sunday's win. "We had opportunities last week. We had opportunities against Baltimore. We had opportunities against the Cardinals. When you make the plays, you win the game. We're 4-3. We're in a decent position. We have the whole season ahead of us."
Despite the mistakes throughout the game, the Patriots did execute well in the most pressure-packed situations of the contest. Brady said that performance can be attributed to coaching.
"That's part of our mental toughness and I think we're coached very hard and we prepare for tough situations," Brady said. "That's the kind of pressure our coach puts on us every day in practice to perform and perform consistently. ... It's nice to win the close games. It's nice to win when you're down three with 1:40 in the game. I think a lot of guys made a lot of really great plays to get us in that position."
And while Brady said the Patriots are not yet a finished product, he indicated they're on the right path.
"It's not like in the seventh week of the year you have all the answers. You never really have all the answers," Brady said. "There's only one team that's really happy at the end of the year, and I think it's a building process and playing your best football at the most important times."
