Bradley Jay: 'Women Are Just As Funny As Men.'

Podcast

Someone recently told me "you know, women are just not very funny." I told her she was wrong, but there is a theory floating around that men are funnier than women. Adam Carolla, comedian, radio host, and reality TV star actually said: "The reason why you know more funny dudes than funny chicks is that dudes are funnier than chicks." Of course, Adam Corolla is wrong too.

Women are every bit as funny as men. I point to wild women such as Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Bette Midler, and Lisa Lampanelli as proof that women can be very funny indeed.

There are male and female comics who make EVERYONE laugh out loud, so rather than debate which gender is funnier – isn't the real question: What makes us laugh?
Is it the Asian comedienne Margaret Cho lamenting the clash of expectations of women in her culture and in the modern western world? The endless questions of when is she getting married and having a baby? Is it the political and ethical protestations of Chris Rock about injustice and inequity in the 'hood? The goofy zingers of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler; the spot-on remarks of Bette Midler? The mime-centric antics of Conan O'Brien or the sex-centric world of Craig Ferguson?

There seems to be a brand of humor for every taste, for every kind of person from nerdy to needy, urbane to hick, angry to observational.

So what is it that makes you laugh? And does it matter if the comic delivering that joke is a man or woman?

Trust me, women have a keen sense of humor. If you're a man who doesn't agree, perhaps women just don't trust you enough to be their humorous selves when you're around.
