Bradley Jay: Pundints Say Newt Won Charleston Debate. They Are Wrong.'
Many political analysts say Newt Gingrich knocked it out of the park in last night's Presidential debate. They are wrong.
Gingrich merely reinforced the fact that he is good at diverting attention to his flaws by attacking the media and his opponents. Here are a few examples of how Newt was exposed.
1. On Credit For Mitt's Prosperity:
Newt Gingrich blathered on about how he had created conditions that benefitted Romney. Romney replied that Newt had been speaker for only four years and that he has been in business twenty five years and that he was not about to give Newt credit for his prosperity. Bang. Ouch
2. On Santorum Dropping Out:
Newt has suggested Santorum drop out of the race. Santorum addressed this by saying he beat Newt in both contests so far and that Newt's notion was not a cogent thought. He inferred that we don't need an erratic President who is always in danger of saying something that will make things "pop." He is correct.
3. On Gingrich's Lack Of Discipline:
Rick Santorum referenced his time with Newt as a legislator, saying he was "undisciplined" and again inferring that Newt is a loose cannon.
4. On Newt's Role In Regan Era:
Mitt blasted Newt for constantly usurping credit for the Regan glory days and pointed out how very little he had to do with it.
5. On The "Open Marriage" Question:
While Newt made points with his already converted fans by bashing Dorchester native moderator John King for the "open marriage" question, the cloud over Newt about his private life darkened. This is troubling if you believe private behavior is indicative what his behavior would be as P.O.T.U.S.
6. On Gingrich's Reliance On Dated References:
Gingrich's constantly inflated references to his involvement in America's halcyon days are wearing thin. Even if his accounts of his impact were accurate, it is ancient history. To many younger voters he may as well be referencing Ulysses S. Grant. What have you done for me lately, Newt?
I believe Newt Gingrich is an unthoughtful person whose intelligence and quick tongue will, if elected president, only get us all in trouble.
