There is such a thing as self-fulfilling prophecy. It is true that "if you can see it, you can be it." When we decide that something is a goal, hundreds of individually insignificant decisions that we make every day, either consciously or sub-consciously, combine to make our dream a reality. That is why it is never too early to start considering where we want to spend retirement.
I believe my choice would be Portugal. Portugal is exotic yet relatively close to home. It is much cheaper to live there than in U.S. Many western Europeans, particularly Germans, retire there. The weather is beautiful and you can wear short sleeves in January. (Southern Portugal is only a short hop from Morocco.) Most importantly, rural Portugal is far less tainted by developmental blight than most of Europe.
Of all the places you have been to, read about, or seen on TV, where would you like to spend your golden years? And remember, golden years do not have to be synonymous with old age.
