Amid heavy security, 40-year-old Jose Luis Tejada appeared briefly in Lawrence District Court to answer to three murder charges.
Few details were offered during the arraignment and prosecutors did not mention any possible motive.
On Monday, police say Tejada approached a stranger outside the home he shared with the family and told them he had committed a crime.
That person called 911.
Police entered the home and found 39-year-old Milka Rivera, 19-year-old Sachary Montanez, and 16-year-old Max Montanez shot to death.
Tejada was arrested nearby and a gun was recovered close to the scene.
Prosecutors say there was no known history of violence in the family and a motive has not been determined.
