Boy Loses Hand, Other Wounded After Lighting Leftover Firework
DORCHESTER (CBS) – Two little boys are recovering from surgery after both were severely injured when they lit a firework they found in a park over the weekend.
One boy lost his hand in the explosion.
Nine-year-olds Raciel Carubuccia and Jerry Constantine found a leftover firework and a lighter in the Willis Beauford Tot-Lot in Dorchester Sunday.
Friends told WBZ-TV they brought the explosive to a nearby intersection and lit it while Carubuccia held it in his hand.
"Boom! This big noise and the little kid, just instantly, you heard him screaming," a witness told WBZ.
Carubuccia lost his hand. He was rushed to Boston Children's Hospital where he had surgery Sunday and is expected to have another procedure Friday.
Constantine was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries to both his hands and arms and lacerations to his face and chest.
"It was horrible," his aunt told WBZ. She did not want to be named.
"My brother opened the door and people were running with my nephew," she said.
"He fractured like every bone in his hand and his arm and the other hand has a laceration that they were able to repair."
It's still not clear who left the fireworks in the park.
There have been no arrests.
"Who had them? Who left them in a park where little kids play?" Constantine's aunt said.
