Bourne To Hold Special Town Meeting To Consider Posting Lifeguards
BOURNE, Mass. (AP) -- Bourne may post lifeguards at its public beaches for the remainder of the summer after all.
The town drew criticism last month when it became the only Cape Cod community to eliminate lifeguards when officials decided it couldn't afford the annual $75,000 cost.
A group of residents concerned about public safety got enough signatures to hold a special town meeting to reconsider the issue.
The Cape Cod Times reports that the board of finance and selectmen discussed the issue Monday but postponed a vote until July 19. The special town meeting is scheduled for July 25. Even if hiring lifeguards is approved, they would not be posted until early August.
Roberta Dwyer, who organized the signature drive for the citizen's petition, said eliminating lifeguards made the town look bad.
