The South End Open Market, better known as SOWA, is a great place to shop for locally made pottery. This is where some of the area's best artisans come to sell their wares each Sunday between May and October. Some local potters and ceramics artists that showcase their work at SOWA include the talented Elizabeth Benotti, Brass River Pottery, Dawn Dishaw, Liz Rodriguez and many more. Whether you're looking for vintage pottery to fit with your current collection or for a unique, newly made piece, there is plenty to see and buy at SOWA.

Another great place to shop for pottery is a short drive north of Boston in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Ipswich Pottery's motto, "from kiln to table," adapted from the local food movement's "farm to table" shows this pottery studio's commitment to local artistry and quality. For over 35 years, Ipswich pottery has offered beautiful ceramics by master potter Nancy Kemp-Soucy. She has created and sold beautiful pieces including mugs, dutch ovens, plates and vases at her showroom. The Ipswich Pottery showroom is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Jill Rosenwald makes colorful, high end ceramics pieces that will give a modern update to any room in your home. Each piece of pottery has a crisp, finished look which is great for people that prefer clean lines and fresh colors to the homemade earthenware look. Her work makes for great wedding gifts, especially because there is an entire section dedicated to monogrammed and personalized pieces. The Jill Rosenwald lamp bases are particularly chic. Though her work is sold across the country, her studio is located locally in South Boston.

Just a bit further south of Boston, in Dartmouth, you will find another gem of the pottery world: Salt Marsh Pottery. There, shoppers will find plenty of floral prints, soft colors and seashell motifs. Most of the pieces are off white with gorgeous hand painted glazes. The artists create floral and leaf patterns by pressing real plants into the clay to create impressions and then coloring the design by hand. The result is beautiful, nature-inspired ceramics that achieve the ever-popular shabby chic look. The studio is open five days a week and is also a popular destination for getting impressions of baby feet and hands made!
