Boston's Best Meatball Dishes

March 9 is National Meatball Day! The perfect comfort food any time of year, meatballs can be served in such a wide variety of ways. From sliders as an appetizer,  your main meal on a pizza or alongside pasta, the juicy, hand-packed meat treats can be featured in many dishes. The following spots offer the area's best meatball selections, with locations throughout Boston.

Imperial Pizza
329 Washington St.
Brighton, MA 02135
(617) 254-0431

Offering pick-up, eat in or delivery services in Brighton, Imperial Pizza offers extensive meatball options. The house-made meatballs swimming in house-made marinara sauce can be enjoyed in a hearty calzone, featured on one of their infamous pizzas (which they have been serving for over 40 years) or with pasta. There is ravioli, spaghetti, or even lasagna to feast on with the meatballs. But it's the meatball parmigiana that stands out at this low-key, family owned and operated shop. For just $5.50, it is served on a French roll that's almost a foot long. They take two hearty hand-packed meatballs and smother the sandwich with tomato sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese, before throwing it in the piping hot pizza oven to toast the bread and melt all the cheese.

Prezza
24 Fleet St.
Boston, MA 02113
(617) 227-1577

Located in the North End, Prezza's delicious menu is well-known, and features some spectacular seasonal items as well. One of the best dishes they serve includes the house-made meatballs, sausage, ribs, tomato and polenta for $26. Alongside one of the wine selections from the extensive menu, this dish is sure to hit the spot for comfort food at its best, in a sophisticated setting.

Sip Wine Bar And Kitchen
571 Washington St.

www.sipwinebarandkitchen.com

Located right downtown in Boston, surrounded by the movies, theaters, hotels and shops, Sip is a place for a date night, girls' night or an after-work soiree. Though it's the wine that's promoted the most — hence the restaurant and bar's name — there is also plenty of dining selections. Perfect for sharing, there is mini kobe meatball dish for $10, which is oven roasted with tomato sauce and romano cheese. The meatballs can also be added to the penne caprese for $17, where fresh mozzarella, romano, vine ripened tomatoes and basil chiffonade are served with the mini kobe meatballs. There's also an option of margherita flatbread with fresh mozzarella, evoo, passata di pomodoro and basil chiffonade with the kobe meatballs for $17.

Teatro
177 Tremont St.
Boston, MA 02111
(617) 778-6841
www.teatroboston.com

Just steps from the movie theater and a short walk to local theaters, shops, hotels and much more, Teatro is a modern restaurant and bar that specializes in Italian classic dishes. One of the many ways this seasonal spot differentiates itself from other area locations is that they have piattini or a small plates menu. Perfect for noshing on with friends, family, business associates, or whomever you are dining with, they go excellent with a specialty cocktail or glass of wine. For meatball lovers, try the marsala glazed veal meatballs with corn polenta, or for the more traditional option, organic beef meatballs are served with whipped ricotta and tomato sauce. Both are available for $13 as a starter.

Marliave
10 Bosworth St
Boston, MA 02108
(617) 422-0004
www.marliave.com

Also in downtown Boston, Marliave serves up French and American inspired dishes. There's a wide range of olive oils, gourmet cheeses and cured meats, salami, and charcuterie for sharing, not to mention oysters and innovative drinks to go along with it. But they also have plenty of entrees like pizza, pasta, sandwiches and, in terms of meatballs, a standout appetizer; the meatball sliders. For the sliders, they keep it simple with meatballs, mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce, all served on toasted buns for $14.
