Grab a blanket, lawn chairs and a picnic basket, and head to the banks of the Charles River for a birds-eye view of this annual event. Colleges and universities as well as club teams compete in events over a two-day period. Events include eight-person, four-person and individual sculls. The event can be watched from shore and is free for spectators, making it an inexpensive outing for families. Souvenirs, food and bathrooms. Due to the popularity of this event, public transportation is encouraged.

The premier minor league baseball team in Massachusetts, the Lowell Spinners offer families good old-fashioned American baseball for a fraction of the cost of the major leagues. Located about 30 miles outside of Boston, Lowell is only a 40-minute drive away. Games extend well into late summer and early fall. Many game nights are theme based, offering free souvenirs to visitors. Some nights also include fireworks.

Located in Chestnut Hill, Boston College athletics never disappoint football and hockey fans. With its hockey team winning its third national championship in the last five years, and a nationally ranked football team, BC sports are a must see. For families, tickets are relatively inexpensive, and season tickets go on sale mid-summer before the start of the academic year. Parking is available on campus. There is a T station located near campus as well.

Boston University's location, which is close to Back Bay, makes attending sporting events convenient and easy. Cheer on the five-time national champion men's hockey team, or take in men's or women's soccer. Plenty of paid and metered parking is readily available along Commonwealth Avenue. Public transportation options are also available along Commonwealth Avenue.

See the Ivy League at its finest, and cheer for the Harvard Crimson while you're at it. After a nearly undefeated 2011 season, the excitement is brewing for the start of the 2012 football season. Parking and concessions are available onsite. Harvard Square, about a third of a mile away, also offers additional parking and restaurants perfect for grabbing a bite before or after the game if the kids are still a little too young for tailgating.
