Boston Water Main Break Disrupts Theater District
BOSTON (CBS) -- An 8-inch water main burst under Warrenton Street on Sunday morning, sending thousands of gallons of water onto the roadway and closing the Charles Playhouse for the day, the Boston Fire Department reported.
At about 11:30 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 74 Warrenton St. When they arrived, water was pouring down the street and the asphalt had started to buckle, the Fire Department reported on Twitter.
Boston Water and Sewer workers also were dispatched to the scene and used a backhoe to gain access to a shut-off valve. The valve was closed at about 1:50 p.m., according to the Fire Department. The 8-inch pipe is a low-pressure water main used for toilets, sinks and other running water in the neighborhood.
The leak temporarily disabled the sprinkler system and bathroom plumbing at the Charles Playhouse, which canceled several performances for the day, the Fire Department reported.
