Boston Shootings Leave 3 Dead, 2 Injured
BOSTON (CBS) -- Two separate shootings in Boston Wednesday night killed three men and injured two others, authorities said.
The shootings came amid a violent night for the Boston area. One woman was fatally shot in an Everett restaurant's parking lot, and a man was gunned down in a car by MIT in Cambridge.
In Mattapan, three men in their 20s were shot on Hosmer Street shortly after 10 p.m., according to Boston EMS. The victims were rushed to Boston Medical Center, where one died and two others are expected to survive.
At around the same time, two men were shot in the area of 12 Ernst Street in Roxbury. Boston police said one victim in his early 20s and another in his late 20s were both killed.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh issued a statement on the shootings in the city Thursday morning.
"I am extremely saddened and disturbed by the violence that took place overnight in our community; this has to stop. It is my utmost priority to ensure the safety of our residents and it is important that we continue to work together with families and youth throughout our neighborhoods, to get them on alternative pathways to success," Walsh said. "I express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were lost during these senseless acts of violence."
One neighbor told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey that the suspect in Roxbury "just came up and started shooting." Boston police believe the victims in Roxbury were targeted and that the shooting was gang-related.
There was no word on any arrests in the Boston shootings as of Thursday morning.
Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans says the number of homicides this year don't tell the full story. The number of homicides is about the same as it's been over the past several years.
"One is way too many," he said. "We are at 20, but our issue is we're up on the shootings. We've had a lot of multiple shootings this year...Overall, we're up 34 shootings."
Evans is asking the public to turn in guns they find in their homes.
He says they've gotten 400 guns off the street this year.
