Boston Public Schools settle federal lawsuit
The Boston public schools will have to overhaul some of its programs as part of a settlement with the federal government.
This after an investigation found that the system violated the civil rights of thousands of students who speak limited English by failing to provide specialized education.
The Boston Globe reports Superintendent Dr. Carol Johnson and officials with the US Dept. of Education and the Dept. of Justice signed the agreement Thursday.
Boston SChools did not admit any wrongdoing in signing the agreement.
The investiation found that slightly more than half of the 8,300 students affected were not receiving appropriate instruction because ineffective testing failed to detect a lack of English fluency.
