Boston Police Sergeant Removed As ICE Liaison
BOSTON (AP) — Boston's mayor says the city is taking another look at how police interact with federal immigration officials amid questions over whether the department has violated the Trust Act, a city regulation meant to prevent police involvement in civil immigration cases.
Police on Friday reassigned its designated liaison with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after WBUR-FM obtained documents showing Sgt. Det. Gregory Gallagher regularly had email exchanges to provide ICE with information on routine cases.
The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Gallagher had been deputized as an ICE Agent, filling in when agents were on leave.
Walsh told reporters Saturday that the emails sparked questions, and said the city is evaluating the liaison role and Boston police's relationship with ICE to ensure it is only focused on "looking for serious criminals."
