Boston Police Sergeant Delivers Baby Girl In Jamaica Plain
JAMAICA PLAIN (CBS) -- A Boston Police sergeant helped deliver a baby girl Friday evening, Boston Police said.
Sergeant Rene Sanchez, a 20-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, was working with other officers on a traffic stop at Mozart and Centre Streets in Jamaica Plain when a man ran over to him and told him that his wife was in labor.
Police said that man and his wife had realized they would not be able to drive themselves to the hospital in time. Sgt. Sanchez called for an ambulance and prepared to deliver the baby.
"I just thought back to what they told us during our training in the Academy and kept updating EMS," Sanchez said in a Boston Police statement. "I told her, push, push, hold my hand and push."
Police said Sgt. Sanchez noticed the umbilical cord was wrapped around the child's neck. While using both hands to unwrap it, he had the baby's father hold down his microphone button so he could keep talking to the medical team that was en route.
Once Boston EMS arrived, Sgt. Sanchez escorted the ambulance carrying the mother, father, and newborn baby girl to a local hospital.
Police said the baby's first cries were broadcast across police radio for all officers in the district to hear.
