Boston Police Officer's Trip To ATM Ends With Bank Robbery Arrest
BOSTON (CBS) – A trip to the ATM turned out to be a lot more exciting than a Boston Police officer ever imagined Tuesday.
The unidentified plainclothes detective stopped at the Citizens Bank on Somerset Street downtown around 12:30 p.m. to make a transaction.
As he finished, he noticed 34-year-old Christopher Washburn of Quincy run out of the bank, after allegedly robbing it.
The officer followed Washburn into a nearby parking garage and ordered him to stop.
Washburn refused and walked onto an elevator.
The officer blocked the doors to stop them from closing and that's when Washburn allegedly threatened to stab the officer if he got on the elevator.
The officer pulled out his gun and said Washburn began to yell "shoot me, shoot me."
The officer didn't fire and Washburn walked off the elevator.
But he didn't stop.
The officer followed Washburn out of the garage, while Washburn allegedly kept yelling "go ahead shoot me."
Moments later, police say there was a physical struggle and two Suffolk County Sheriffs arrived and helped the officer arrest Washburn, who, police say, later admitted to robbing the bank.
All $1,200 that was stolen was recovered.
Washburn was arraigned Wednesday on charges of unarmed robbery, assault and battery on a public employee, and resisting arrest.
He was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail.
