Hearing To Focus On Body Cameras For Boston Police
BOSTON (AP) — Residents in Boston will have a chance to weigh in on the city's plan to equip police officers with body cameras.
A City Council committee is holding a hearing Thursday evening at the Mildred Community Center to review the police department's plan to pilot the cameras.
The department has promised for months to provide up to 100 cameras to patrol officers for a six-month test.
The department announced in mid-July it had reached an agreement with the police union to conduct the pilot.
Police Commissioner William Evans says he's aiming for an August launch but the cameras haven't been purchased yet.
Boston is among the largest departments in the country that doesn't use the cameras. Some civil rights activists have pushed for them in the wake of recent officer-involved killings.
