Boston Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Injured
BOSTON (CBS) -- Two men were shot in Mattapan early Sunday morning and one of them has died, police say.
The other man has non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the shooting happened near Osceola Street and Hopewell Road around 4:30 a.m.
Both victims were rushed to the hospital and one was later pronounced dead.
It's the first deadly shooting in Boston after two weeks of relative calm.
"After July 4th we've had a really good summer, our shootings are down by 25 percent," Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said. "An incident last night, I don't think there's much we could've done about it but it's unfortunate somebody lost their life."
Mourners placed a row of candles at the shooting scene on Sunday.
Longtime community activist Rev. Eugene Rivers says police are doing a good job reaching out to the community, but prevention is key.
"We could use more help from the city and the feds," he said. "We need more programs that derail gang formation."
The shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made yet. Anyone with information can call Boston Police Homicide Detectives at 617-343-4470 or anonymously leave a tip at 1-800-494-TIPS.
