Boston Non-Profit: Buy School Uniforms For Girls To Honor Kidnapped Students In Nigeria
BOSTON (CBS) - The kidnapping of at least 276 school girls in Nigeria left many people outraged and feeling helpless, wishing they could do something.
Megan Kelly has a non-profit in Boston trying to change that.
Kelly is the president and CEO of Tailored for Education, which raises money to buy uniforms for children living in developing countries, where uniforms are mandatory in order to go to school.
"We have provided 15,000 uniforms in 11 different countries," she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
Kelly was horrified to hear of the kidnappings, but not completely surprised, because she's seen this kind of extremism before.
"We hear a lot about different villages having trouble getting girls to secondary school because it's a dangerous commute," she said.
"They're scared of a girl with a book, not missiles, or guns or this new-age warfare we have. They're scared of a girl being educated. They should be. Girls can change the world."
Kelley says she knows it's frustrating not to be able to do anything but she believes the ultimate answer is to get more children educated.
"We can't let this stop a global mission to get more girls and boys into school," she told WBZ.
"What we've done is start a campaign to provide one uniform for each of the missing girls, in hopes that we can get 276 more children into school in their honor."
