Boston, Montreal Mayors Wager Over NHL Series
BOSTON (AP) — Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre have a wager on the Stanley Cup Quarterfinals between the Bruins and the Canadiens.
The teams are two of the league's original six franchises. The longtime rivals opened their 34th playoff series Thursday in Boston.
Walsh said the winning mayor will host the series loser for a visit, and the winning city's team flag will fly at the loser's city hall.
Walsh said "the best hockey in the world happens when the Bruins and Canadiens play each other," and welcomed Montreal fans to Boston.
Coderre said in a statement released by Walsh that he can't wait for the Boston mayor to visit Montreal and said sports is "the beginning of a great friendship and partnership."
Walsh succeeded longtime Boston Mayor Thomas Menino this year.
