Boston Mayor Tom Menino To Undergo Elective Prostate Surgery
BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston Mayor Tom Menino is having elective surgery Friday to deal with an enlarged prostate.
The mayor's office issued a statement Monday saying that "the elective surgery will take a few hours and require a few days in the hospital and some recovery at home."
Menino is expected to make a full recovery.
A source tells WBZ that the surgery has nothing to do with cancer.
The mayor, who has been in quite a bit of discomfort, missed Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester.
The 70-year-old is Boston's longest-serving mayor. He has suffered from a rash of injuries and infections since he was last re-elected in November 2009.
Menino announced in March he would not seek re-election.
