Boston Marathon Weather Forecast: Warmer Than Average

BOSTON (CBS) – Here is the latest on the forecast for this weekend and Marathon Monday.

Saturday will start out sunny and even frosty in spots.

A chilly east-southeasterly breeze will freshen to 10-25 mph during the day as the cloudiness increases. Rain will arrive from west to east across the region Saturday evening with the potential of 0.75 to 1.5 inches to about 10 a.m. Sunday.

A mix of clouds and sunshine with a brisk westerly wind is in store for Sunday afternoon with highs in the lower 60s.

On Marathon Monday, the Hopkinton temperature will be near or just under 40 degrees at 7am with a steady rise through the 40s into the 50s by the staggered start times between 9-and-11 a.m.

A frontal boundary will be approaching the area during the day resulting in varying amounts of clouds and some sunshine.

Scattered showers cannot be ruled out but, presently, it appears that the highest risk is placed in areas north and west of the Boston Marathon route up to 2-to-3 p.m.

Ahead of the cold front, a southwesterly wind will blow at 10-15 mph through most of the day. This would be mainly a tail wind and, at times, a cross wind component along the running route. It will continue to warm up to near 60 degrees by noon then into the middle 60s around Boston by 3 p.m.

In conclusion, expect warmer than average weather for the great Boston Marathon but, thankfully, it will be about 20 degrees lower than the 86 degrees in 2004 and about 30 degrees lower than the hottest race ever 35 years ago.
