US Authorities: 48 Boston Gang Members, Associates Indicted
BOSTON (CBS/AP) — Federal authorities say 48 members and associates of Boston's largest and most powerful gang have been indicted on drug and gun charges.
Authorities said at a news conference that members and associates of the Columbia Point Dawgs were indicted Thursday. Seven remain at large.
"We allege the Columbia Point Dawgs are responsible for decades of violence in Boston," U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said.
They say the gang started operating out of the Columbia Point housing project in the Dorchester section of Boston in the 1980s, eventually trafficking drugs from Boston to Maine.
They say the gang's infiltration of drug trafficking territories held by rival gangs led to numerous killings. They cited the 1990s killing of a member who was shot while sitting in Whitney Houston's Bentley with her husband, Bobby Brown.
A rival gang member was convicted.
"The Columbia Point Dawgs have been considered the largest, most feared and influential gang in Boston, with its members flaunting their drug trafficking wealth with expensive jewelry and luxury cars," Ortiz said.
In all, 15 of those vehicles have been seized, including 31 guns and $1.5 million in cash.
Authorities say the arrests will lead to safer streets in Boston this summer.
