Boston Firefighter's Helmet Stolen From Truck
BOSTON (CBS) - Boston firefighter Brian Carey says a firefighter's helmet is a badge of honor. "It is literally part of you. It's gone where you've gone," Carey said.
Carey says a year ago someone stole his leather helmet which he had hidden underneath his coat in the back of this fire truck. "It's your identity and history of your whole career on this job. Every fire I've gone and incident I went to. I've earned everything when it comes to the damage on that helmet," he said.
Carey recently took to social media asking anyone whose seen his helmet to please return it. "This is irreplaceable. They don't make this helmet anymore," Brian said.
Carey has been on the job for 31 years. He comes from a long line of firefighters. His two brothers are firefighters and his father was also a Boston firefighter.
He says he plans to retire in about four years. He says he planned to take his helmet and place it next to his late father's helmet because that's where it belongs. "My father passed away in 1980 and I have his helmet with me now and I want to have his and my helmet sitting together in a nice place of honor in my home," Carey said.
Although he knows the chances of someone returning his helmet are slim, he's not giving up hope. "It would be unbelievable. The sentimental aspect is tremendous. It would sure mend a big hole," Carey said.
