Boston College To Retire Pete Frates' Jersey At Weekend Ceremony
BOSTON (CBS) – The Boston College baseball team will retire the jersey of one of the program's most recognizable players this weekend.
On Saturday, the Eagles will host the program's fifth annual ALS Awareness Game.
During the pregame festivities, Boston College will retire the No. 3 jersey of former captain Pete Frates, who has become an advocate for ALS since he was diagnosed with the disease in 2012.
In 2014, Frates helped lead the viral "Ice Bucket Challenge" campaign that raised more than $100 million for ALS research.
The Beverly native started 107 games for Boston College from 2004-07, and was captain of the team his senior year.
In 2013, Frates was given the Eddie Pellagrini Award as someone who has given back to the Boston College baseball program.
Pellagrini, the winningest coach in BC history, is the only other Eagle to have his number retired at Shea Field.
First pitch for Saturday's game against Wake Forest is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
