Number Of Boston College Students Sickened By Chipotle Rises To 120
BOSTON (CBS) – The number of Boston College students who became sick from norovirus that originated from the Cleveland Circle Chipotle has now risen to triple digits.
More than 120 students have reported symptoms consistent with the norovirus.
The Boston Public Health Commission says laboratory testing confirmed the presence of norovirus at the restaurant and Boston College has received reports of students' roommates contracting the illness.
Chipotle closed the restaurant in order to clean it and determine what caused the illness to spread.
Impacted students have suffered from vomiting and nausea that can last 24-48 hours and diarrhea that may last longer.
The school asks anyone who has norovirus symptoms to contact Health Services.
Boston College has taken what it calls "proactive steps" to deal with the outbreak.
Facilities staff members have stepped up efforts to clean common areas, dining areas stopped self-service as of noon Wednesday and BC Dining Services is offering "Flu Buddy Packs" that friends can purchase for their sick roommates.
The Chipotle norovirus outbreak comes not long after a multi-state outbreak of E. coli linked to the restaurant.
Boston Health Department officials, however, determined that the students had not contracted E. coli.
Members of the Boston College men's basketball team were among those who became ill after eating at Chipotle.
