"I think it's the greatest city on Earth and I am ready and able and prepared to serve all of our neighborhood."
Consalvo joins Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley and fellow city councilor John Connolly in the race.
He admits Mayor Tom Menino's shoes will be tough to fill, but he'll do his best.
"He's made this city great. There will be no mayor that can match it," Consalvo said.
"What I hope to do is be able to continue to build on this greatness that he has put forward."
The race will likely include many other colleagues and friends.
"I think we'll all run clean, professional campaigns. We'll remain friends and at the end of the day, it's an opportunity for all of us that doesn't happen often. I think that speaks to the awesome civic life of our city."
