Boston-Based Ad Lab Helps Confront Cliche Instagram Oversharers

BOSTON (CBS) - An advertising company with offices in Boston and Philadelphia has come up with a clever way to stage an intervention for friends who overshare and constantly post cliche pictures on Instagram.

It's often a point of annoyance or even contention when Instagram friends post constant selfies, snap pictures of every meal they eat, or document every second of their kid or cat's life. But short of unfollowing the guilty parties or jeopardizing friendships, there hasn't been a way to hint that they're overdoing it.

In response, A&G Labs – the innovation unit of Boston and Philly-based agency Allen & Gerritsen – came up with Pic Nix. The program allows people to use a robot to anonymously call out offending Instagrammers.

George Ward, SVP of Innovation at Allen & Gerritsen says it's something they've been working on for a while.

"We've had this idea kicking around for a few years. Originally the project was internally code named "Insta-vention" because we wanted to allow people to have an intervention with those they follow on Instagram," Ward told CBS Boston in an email.

"If you don't have a personal relationship with a user that you follow, things are easy, you just unfollow. But with friends, it's different and things can get awkward, so we wanted to build in the ability to remain anonymous – but to give them the heads up."

At this point, they have no current plans to expand to Twitter or Facebook.
