Boston-Based Coast Guard Cutter Helps Capture Drug Smuggling Sub
BOSTON (CBS) - A local Coast Guard crew played a big role in an unusual drug bust in the Caribbean.
Coast Guard cutter Seneca helped capture a drug smuggling submarine in the western Caribbean.
A Border Patrol plane spotted the sub, and the Coast Guard moved in to capture it.
They had to scramble to seize the drugs, because the drug smuggling submarines are designed to sink quickly if captured.
On board the sub was nearly 15,000 pounds of cocaine worth $180 million.
The Seneca's home port is Boston.
