Boomer Esiason: 'I Know Exactly What Geno Smith Is Going Through'
BOSTON (CBS) - CBS Sports football analyst and WFAN radio host Boomer Esiason called in to Toucher & Rich Monday morning, as he does every week throughout the NFL season, to talk some football.
Boomer Esiason was impressed with Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater on Sunday, two rookie quarterbacks making their first start.
However, another youngster is making headlines this morning.
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith had another poor performance on Sunday against the Lions in front of the home crowd.
Smith completed 17 of 33 passes with a touchdown and two turnovers. He's now tied for the lead league in interceptions. The Jets fans in attendance chanted "We Want Vick" and after the game Smith can be seen on camera saying "[expletive] you" to a nearby heckler.
"I wore that green uniform (for the Jets) for three years, had three different head coaches and it got progressively worse as my career here went on. I completely empathize where Geno Smith is right now. I know exactly what he's going through. He's in a very dark place right now. On the field and off the field. There's going to be a million questions about if the team has confidence in him going forward. This is when you find out if the guy you've got behind center has the stones needed to go out there and win football games after a performance like yesterday. I can totally appreciate where Geno Smith is right now with his career."
Boomer Esiason also offered his thoughts on Florida State quarterback and Heisman winner Jameis Winston.
"I wouldn't [draft him in the first round]. I don't like anything about the way he carries himself. In this league you're looking for that next player to be the face of your franchise. If you look at Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees and the way they carry themselves, and then you look at Jameis Winston you're saying to yourself, 'No way I'm investing a first round draft pick and all that money on this kid.' A third, fourth, fifth round flyer on the young man that's a different story. The problem with him is he's been enabled his entire life. Everywhere he goes he's Jameis Winston and Florida State. Once he leaves the cocoon he'll find out pretty quickly what life is all about and how many people are not gonna enable him. He's got a lot of growing up to do."
