Bomb Squad Detonates WWII Round On Cape Cod Beach

WELLFLEET (CBS) – Marconi Beach in Wellfleet was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a round of ammunition washed ashore.

The bomb squad cleared the area and isolated the live round that was most likely left over from World War II.

The State Fire Marshal's office says it was a 14-inch 10 mm round.

Officers later detonated it on a remote part of the beach.

No one was hurt.

Sgt. Jerry Galizio of the State Police bomb squad told the Cape Cod Times that some areas on the Cape and Islands were used as military practice fields during the war so it's not unusual for ordnance to still be found in the area.

Marconi Beach will be open on Thursday.
