Missing Man's Body Found In Cape Tunnel
BARNSTABLE (CBS) - Crews located the body of a missing man in a trench and tunnel network in Barnstable on Tuesday.
Police had been using robotic cameras to search the bunker for 29-year-old Jason Bryant of West Yarmouth. He was originally reported missing by his family May 31.
Investigators began searching a trench and tunnel network in the woods of Hyannis Pond in Barnstable Monday.
Investigators say Bryant dug the tunnels and was likely buried inside after a portion of a trench collapsed.
WBZ-TV's Bill Shields reports.
Crews resumed digging at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators also brought in a State police search dog.
It's still not clear why Bryant dug the tunnels. Barnstable police Sgt. Sean Sweeney thought he may have been crushed by a boulder.
According to police, Bryant's tunnel network started in the side of a hill with two caverns, one about ten feet wide, the other around eight feet. He then dug at least three tunnels, each about four feet in diameter, apparently trying to connect the caverns.
Rescuers are focusing their search in one of those tunnels.
"It's sandy soil, not stable, which probably led to the collapse," Sweeney said.
Bryant's sister returned to the scene Tuesday, but had no comment on what her brother was doing here.
Police found shovels, but they say it didn't appear Bryant had anything to hide.
"There is nothing up there, nothing illegal, it doesn't look like anything like that at all, nothing to indicate that. I don't know whether he planned on living in the tunnels," Sweeney said.
