Bob Ryan: 'Amusing' To See Notre Dame Football In Academic Scandal
BOSTON (CBS) - There's no love lost between fans of Boston College and Notre Dame -- the only two major Catholic colleges of D-1 football.
Just ask Globe columnist Bob Ryan, a BC alum.
Leave it to Bob Ryan to dance on the grave of Notre Dame's misfortune, with their football team involved in yet another scandal.
Ryan joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones and Mike Flynn Monday morning, filling in for Toucher & Rich, to discuss the Irish.
"Notre Dame is a university whose graduates -- some of them -- we call them 'the Domers.' They are professional Notre Dame guys. They wear pins. They wear the regalia. They subscribe to Blue and Gold Illustrated. They hang on every word. Those people are a bit overbearing, and they create the impression that if one of them were to go to the bathroom that there would be no odor emitted. Those people annoy me. Are they the majority? I don't think so, but they're there.
"Notre Dame holds itself as high and mighty above everybody else in that regard. No question. So it's kind of amusing to the rest of us when Notre Dame's hands are caught in the cookie jar. Notre Dame was in fact everything people said it was until the Lou Holtz era. That's just my opinion, but Lou Holtz put them on a slippery slope. He started recruiting players that they were not recruiting before and they started letting them in. If you check, that's when occasionally Notre Dame guys would show up on the police docket, and that's when occasionally these [scandals] would surface. It all started with Lou Holtz.
"Notre Dame is no different than anybody else, and their people will not admit it. That's all this proves," Ryan said in closing.
