Blake Swihart To Get Season-Ending Surgery On Ankle

BOSTON (CBS) -- Red Sox catcher/outfielder Blake Swihart will have season-ending surgery performed on his left ankle, manager John Farrell announced after Tuesday night's 5-3 win over the Yankees.

Swihart injured his ankle on June 4th against the Blue Jays, running into a wall while playing left field at Fenway Park. Swihart left the game and the Red Sox placed him on the 15-day DL the next day. Swihart moved to the 60-day DL on July 9th.

A promising switch-hitting prospect, Swihart batted just .258 with no homers and nine RBI in 19 games (62 at-bats) in the major leagues in 2016. The 24-year-old was being tried out in left field at the time of his injury to make room in the lineup for catcher Christian Vazquez.
